Smaller and not commercial like Pompeii the city of Herculaneum was buried by the same eruption of mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., but here a layer mud, 60 feet deep covered the city and when it hardened transformed into hard tufa stone, the excavations have brought up to light a small part of the city.
Being a residential area to be visited are the villas that where once overlooking the sea and the whole bay of Naples like the "Casa dell' Albergo" or the "casa dei Cervi". In Herculaneum is to be seen the original wooden timber of the roofs perfectly carbonised and preserved.
